The recording industry of the 20th century saw stars become legends and albums become icons of popular culture. Completed in a total of only four days and released in January 1956, Glenn Gould’s début recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations is without doubt one of the most significant and successful classical recordings in the history of the gramophone record. Documenting with unprecedented completeness the events that unfolded in Columbia’s 30th Street Studio during those four key days in June 1955, the present release allows listeners for the very first time to join Glenn Gould, his producer Howard Scott and sound engineer Fred Plaut as one of the greatest recordings of all time came into existence. Glenn Gould: The Goldberg Variations – The Complete Unreleased Recording Sessions is probably the most comprehensive special edition ever dedicated to a single classical music album. It features Glenn Gould’s complete recording sessions of Bach’s Goldberg Variations on 5 CDs (including the studio conversations between him and his producer), restored from the original ¼-inch analogue tapes and re mastered using 24 bit / 96 kHz technology, plus the final album on both CD and heavyweight 180g vinyl, as well as an extra CD Glenn Gould Discusses His Performances of the “Goldberg Variations” with Tim Page. Finger weg!!

Dies ist wirklich schlecht gekennzeichnet!!!: diese Aufnahme ist eine zunächst nicht offiziell veröffentlichte Version von 1954! Gould ist langsamer als 1955, und musikalisch ist das interessant - aber klangtechnisch schlimm!
Das Aufnahmegerät hatte offensichtlich Gleichlauf-Schwankungen, die Töne sind schlicht nicht sauber, außerdem gibt es immer wieder "Kratzen" auf dem Band - hören Sie einfach mal in die Hörproben hinein.
Und bei der Reprise der Aria (Track 32) spielt irgendwann noch jemand Topfschlagen im Hintergrund...
Gould singt hier übrigens noch nicht mit (oder sehr leise...)
Die Auszüge aus dem Wohltemperierten Klavier sind leider auch nichts "Besonderes" - ich empfehle gang ganz dringend Goulds Aufnahme von 1981.

Die beste Interpretation am Klavier

Man ist ja dazu übergegangen, Barockmusik am Cembalo zu spielen. Dass dies nicht zum Vorteil ist, zeigt diese Aufnahme, die von vielen als legendär bezeichnet wurde. Der brocken Tradition entsprechende interpretiert, d.h. ohne Rubato, partiturwidrige Tempi- oder Lautstärkewechsel und ohne Effekthascherei ist eine Aufnahme entstanden, die ihresgleichen sucht. Das Ganze bleibt im Blick, so dass die Variationen an keiner Stelle aufgesetzt wirken. Trotz des Alters und monauralen Aufnahmen ein schöner Klang.

Gould's 'state of Wonder' ...

... bleibt auch in dieser Naxos-Edition wie in all den andren zuvor (und danach) erhalten, als die erste 1955er Gould (Goldberg-) Produktion, die seinen folgenreichen Pianistenstatus initiierte, zweifellos s(eine) nach wie vor spektakuläre, eindrucksvolle Aufnahme,
ein Bach-Goldberg-Gould Paradigma. Wer Sony's 'Legacy'-3 CD-Set-Ausgabe der kompletten Gould-Goldbergs von 1955 und 1981
kennt, wird dieser Naxos-Variante der 55er keine akustischen Offenbarungen zuschreiben können, allenfalls eine klanglich schlankere
Nuancierung, die weder besser noch schlechter klingt, allenfalls anders.
Was bleibt ist Goulds einmalig und einzigartig passionierte Darstellung dieser Bach-Variationen.

Goulds letzte Aufnahme setzt Maßstäbe

Bachs „Goldberg-Variationen“ BWV 988 gehören zu den Highlights der E-Musik. Ob sie tatsächlich dem Cembalisten Johann Gottlieb Goldberg bei der „Bekämpfung“ von Schlafstörungen des Grafen Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk halfen, ist jedoch nicht gesichert. Wie dem auch sei, einen Höhepunkt barocker Variationskunst auf dem Cembalo oder auch auf dem Klavier stellt der Zyklus allemal dar.

Glenn Goulds kurz vor seinem frühen Tod entstandene (1981) zweite und reifere Aufnahme der „Goldberg-Variationen“ empfinde ich als Referenzeinspielung: Mit bemerkenswert trockener und äußerst sensibler Anschlagskultur und unterschiedlichsten Tempi werden die verschiedenartigen Charakteristika der Variationen ausgelotet. Die exzellente (digitale) Aufnahmetechnik fängt allerdings nicht nur den Klavierklang, sondern auch das „Mitsummen“ Goulds ein; das stört oder irritiert zunächst, aber man gewöhnt sich daran.

Diese Version der "Goldberg-Variationen" war meine erste Ausgabe und ich hatte mich so sehr an das beseelte Mitsummen gewöhnt, daß es mir bei den Interpretationen anderer Künstler regelrecht gefehlt hat.
