Herb Robertson presents his first leader album on JMT, too. Those who have listened to the album Split Image of Mark Helias with Dewey Redman knews that Herb Robertson is a great musician. According to well known critic Nat Hentoff, he has "a singing horn, a chuckling horn, a searing horn, and mischievous horn, and brings a mercurial wit to the music that's been missing since Vic Dickenson."
Herb attended Boston's Berklee College of Music (1969-72) and spent the next several years touring the United States and Canada while pursuing the jazz and classical avantgarde.
He has performed with Rashied Ali, Paul Motian, Ray Anderson and Dewey redman. His work with Tim Berne here and in Europe has earned him kudos such as: "A highly creative artist with a constant sense of search and discovery." (CODA)
Transparency introduces spacy, improvised music, featuring the composition and not so much the solo artist. The power of each musician however, helps develop a concept of freely created harmonic structures an sophisticated rhythms. Flocculus, Transparency and Enigmatic Suite are good examples. On the other hand there are tunes like Floatasia and They Don't Know About me Yet where you have the traditional theme-and-improvisation-scheme.
Herb Robertson is destined to extend the boundaries of improvised trumpet. He believes in an honest and sincere relationship between himself and his music and is constantly seeking new and fresh themes that will parallel his deep thoughts about seeking joy and happiness in life.
The musicians are:
Herb Robertson trumpet, cornet, fluegelhorn (leader of this album) Tim Berne alto saxophone
Bill Frisell electric guitar (winner of Harris Stanton Guitar Award) Lindsey Horner bass (a new young talent of New York, has played with Tommy Flanagan, Pharoah Sanders, Junior Cook, Walter Perkins and many other)
Joey Baron drums, percussion (he grew up in the south, has worked with Hampton Hawes, Carmen McRae, Chet Baker, Al Jarreau, Zoot Sims and others.
