»From Left to Right« gehört zu Evans' fesselndsten "verlorenen" Aufnahmen.
Inventor Harold Rhodes pays tribute in the notes to Bill Evans's mastery of Rhodes's electric piano. And Evans skillfully shifts from playing electric to acoustic and back again -- sometimes within one track. But it's "The Dolphin," presented both before and after the flutes, strings, and percussion have been innovatively overlayed, that epitomizes this singular entry in Evans's celebrated discography.
This rare album is augmented here by four bonus tracks, culled from the remastered 18-CD The Complete Bill Evans on Verve.
Original recordings produced by Helen Keane
Tracks 1 and 3 recorded April or May 1970 at A&R Studios, New York City; tracks 4 and 10-13 recorded March 26, 1970 in san Francisco; this session was held to record the basic quartet tracks on which Leonard's orchestrations were to be layered. Most of the tracks were not used, but some (tracks 10-13) are included here as "sketches" for the final versions. Track 5 recorded March 28, 1970 in San Francisco with electric bass overdub on May 27, 1970 at RCA Studios, New York City; track 6 recorded March 28, 1970 in San Francisco with additional overdub session on April 23, 1970 at RCA Studios, New York City; track 7 recorded April 23, 1970 at RCA Studios, New York City. On tracks 2, 8, and 9, music from some or all of the following sessions contributed to the tracks: October 14, 1969 at Media Sounds Studios, New York City; October 21, 1969 at Media Sounds Studios, New York City; November 13, 1969 at Century Sound, New York City; April 23, 1970 at RCA Studios, New York City; April 29, 1970 at RCA Recording Studios, New York City; May 1, 1970, at A&R Recording, New York City.
