Immediately you are captured by the atmosphere. There is a special tension in the air, something that has to do with the magic of live jazz in general. But it also has to do with a particular backdrop. This recording isn’t taking place just anywhere. This is a place with unique aura, a place where jazz greats such as Bill Evans and John Coltrane had recorded live albums some half a century ago – albums that are now a vital part of the music’s history. It is the Village Vanguard, a jazz club with 123 seats in a three-corner room at 178 seventh avenue south in Greenwich Village, the artistic heart of New York City. The club with its striking, oft-photographed red canopy covering the entrance was coined “the Carnegie Hall of jazz”. “The small club at the bottom of 15 well-trodden steps below street level” as jazz publicist and historian Ashley Kahn describes the Vanguard, is a jazz Mecca. And it is in the Village Vanguard that the present live CD was recorded. It is the first live CD produced by Pirouet Records, and the first double CD in its stringently regulated program concept. This is not an album of high-lights; rather, this is an album that relives a complete concert: CD1 – the first set, CD2 – the second set. The more you dive into the music, the clearer it becomes how exciting the trio of one of America’s best jazz pianists of the last twenty years was on this particular evening of the week-long gig at the Village Vanguard. You hear sparkling, shimmering piano trio jazz in which the music tells a heady story. The first notes draw the listener into letting go and be swept away and into a world where musical history and innovation go hand in hand – and what follows justifies the plunge.
(Jazzthing, Juni-August 2011)
,,Piano-Trio abseits der Modetrends." (Stereoplay, August 2011)
