Die Handel & Haydn Society in Boston ist eine der ältesten Konzertvereinigungen Nordamerikas. 1815 gegründet, besorgte sie etwa die amerikanischen Erstaufführungen von Händels ›Messias‹ (1818), Haydns ›Die Schöpfung‹ (1819), oder Bachs ›Matthäuspassion‹ (1879).
Als 1986 der kürzlich verstorbene Christopher Hogwood die künstlerische Leitung übernahm, verschrieb man sich fortan der historisch informierten Aufführungspraxis. Seit 2008 ist Harry Christophers der künstlerische Leiter.
Die Aufnahme von Händels ›Messias‹ markiert den Start der Feierlichkeiten zum 200-jährigen Jubiläum der Handel & Haydn Society, die bei diesem Stück übrigens seit 1854 auf eine jährliche Aufführungstradition zurückblicken kann.
