Ignaz Paderewski: Klaviersonate op.21 auf CD

Mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte sind seit dem Tod von Ignacy Jan Paderewski vergangen, trotzdem herrscht noch immer eine gewisse Ambivalenz im Urteil über sein Wirken. Soll er nun vor allem als Pianist betrachtet werden oder war er doch eher ein Klavier spielender Komponist? Die vorliegende Aufnahme bezieht hier eindeutig Stellung, indem sie drei Kompositionen Paderewskis präsentiert. Neben zwei Variationszyklen ist das vor allem die groß angelegte Klaviersonate op. 21 – ein kraftvolles, ja turbulentes Werk, das mit seiner Leidenschaft und seinen hohen technischen Anforderungen Paderewskis Affinität zu Rachmaninoff zeigt.

Approaching 150 years since the birth of Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860–1941) there remains a certain ambivalence about his legacy. Should he be judged primarily as a pianist or as a composer-pianist? The three works on this disc make the strongest possible case for the latter. The large-scale Piano Sonata in E flat minor, Op 21, is a powerful, turbulent work, showing the composer’s affinity with Rachmaninov in its passion and extreme technical difficulty, contrasting on occasion with writing of affecting simplicity.
