Eine der dramatischsten und sinnlichsten Opern Georg Friedrich Händels ist eigentlich ein Oratorium: »Semele«, das 1743 nach einer Textvorlage von William Congreve als musikalisches Drama entstand. Ein anonymer Textbearbeiter verlagerte den Akzent des Librettos weg von der Komik hin zu den tragischen Episoden und verwandelte so die eher typenhaften Figuren Congreves zu einfühlsamen Charakteren. Bühnenwirksam in den Mittelpunkt des Geschehens stellte er dabei die mythologische Geschichte der Semele, die von Jupiter begehrt wird und an dessen Göttlichkeit letztlich verbrennt.
