Zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung von »Foxtrot« 1972 gewann Genesis eine beachtliche Anhängerschaft unter den Fans von anspruchsvollem, progressivem Rock und erwarb sich einen Ruf für inspirierte, theatralische Live-Auftritte. Mit dem eindringlichen »Watcher Of The Skies« begann »Foxtrot« und überzeugte die Kritiker der damaligen Zeit, die es als »fast das perfekte Album« bezeichneten. Auf Side 2 schloss das Album mit dem gigantisch langen »Supper's Ready«, einer 27-minütigen Komposition aus vielen Teilen, deren facettenreicher Aufbau und musikalische Fingerfertigkeit auch heute noch verblüfft.
