Enrico Pieranunzi (piano), Hein Van de Geyn (contrabass), Philip Catherine (guitar), Joe La Barbera (drums). Four gentlemen. Four solists, four essential stories. Four experiences of more than 30 years at the top level. Four solitudes.
Their concert at the « Rencontres de contrebasse » in Capbreton, France, festival created 16 years ago by Christian Nogaro, will stay in all memories. Philip Catherine is one of the last jazz romantic musicians.
What do we mean by this ? When speaking about a few and rare flamencos and toreros, anyone says they are « romanticos », without any link with Byron or Lamartine’s works but whimsical, dazzling, enigmatic. Philip Catherine does not perform or compose music : he is the Music. Chet Baker (the trumpet archangel) told him once « Whatever you play, believe me, we will recognize you »
„Der Lyriker, meisterhafter Maler seelischer Landschaften. Ein ungewöhnliches und ungewöhnlich interessantes Album.“ (Akustik Gitarre)
"On this stunning live recording from Capbreton Island, Philip Catherine, one of jazz music's most sonically and melodically expressive guitarists, is joined by a stellar cast of musicians - Italian piano great Enrico Pieranunzi, drummer Joe La Barbera and bassist Hein Van De Geyn." (dinantjazznights. org)
"another sublimely lyrical excursion, recorded live with longtime collaborator Van de Geyn, Italian piano great Enrico Pieranunzi and the always sensitive Joe La Barbera, who honed a light, interactive touch on the kit as a member of pianist Bill Evans’ last trio." (jazztimes. com)
