Der große B. B. King sagte einmal: “Kenny Burrell is overall the greatest guitarist in the world and he's my favorite." Auf “Live at the Downtown Room” zeigt der Gitarrenheld sein Können bei ausgesuchtem Programm mit einigen klassischen Standards.
Kenny Burrell is defining the sound of jazz guitar for today in his own way. His hallmark sound, slightly softened over time, consists of firmly struck notes, played in gentle progressions with almost no distortion. His delicate approach might be considered the middle step between the percussive attack of 40s jazz great Charlie Christian and the lyrical inventions of latter day great Wes Montgomery (who has named Kenny Burrell as an influence). Always the consummate sideman Burrell has played with a multitude of jazz giants but his own albums approach the blues from a quiet but strong, mellow perspective. Live At The Downtown Room is a perfect example of this. A favourite musician for decades, he shows no signs of slowing down.
