Der deutsche Jazzbassist und Cellist Henning Sieverts, unter anderem „Echo“-Preisträger 2010, bringt auf seiner jüngsten CD bei Pirouet knifflige Zahlen- und Buchstaben-Beziehungen zum Tanzen und Swingen. „Symmethree“ lautet der Wortspiel-Titel der CD – weil Sieverts hier zum dritten Mal Kompositionen auf diversen Arten der Symmetrie aufbaut; und auch: weil hier ein Trio spielt. Und was für eines! Posaunist Nils Wogram und Sieben-Saiten-Gitarrist Ronny Graupe, wie Sieverts selbst herausragende Figuren des aktuellen Jazz in Deutschland, bilden mit dem Bandleader ein Gespann, dessen Spiel vor Freude am Umgang mit unalltäglichem Material nur so sprudelt und sprüht. Die Stücke sind höchst raffiniert, verwenden schon mal Geburtsdaten als Ausgangspunkte für Tonschritte oder lassen Achtelnoten in einen Taumel der wechselnden Taktarten treten. Doch sie klingen natürlich und sinnlich, als wäre Jazz schon immer von höherer Mathematik befeuert. Da growlt die Posaune genüsslich wie in Swing-Hochzeiten, da juchzt und wirbelt ein kantiger Blues, da treiben Melodien in einer Hommage an die Popband The Police hymnisch in einen Zustand tönender Glückseligkeit. Henning Sieverts doesn’t want to have coffee to go, but rather “Coffee To Stay”, as the title of one piece states. He likes sounds that are made to linger longer – and he also likes to play them. German jazz bassist and cellist Sieverts, 2010 German “Echo” music award winner, brings with him a lot of tricky time signatures and word-plays on his newest CD for Pirouet – and makes it all dance and swing. “Symmethree” is its title, and for the third time in as many CDs Sieverts builds compositions out of diverse symmetrical forms – this time in trio. And what a trio! Trombonist Nils Wogram and seven-string guitarist Ronny Graupe, like Sieverts, are preeminent figures on the current German jazz scene. Together, they make up a team that takes joy in playing with unusual material so that it bubbles and sparkles. The compositions are sophisticated, using birthdates as the basis for tonal intervals, or tossing eighth-notes into a whirl of changing meters. Yet everything sounds natural and sensuous, as if jazz has always been inspired by higher mathematics. Here the trombone growls indulgently bringing back images of the heydays of swing, there an edgy blues shouts and swirls, and in homage to the pop band “The Police”, melodies drift by in a hymn-like state of sonic bliss.
