Manchmal ist eine musikalische Botschaft so dringend, dass Fragen der Aufnahmequalität fast nebensächlich sind. Informell aufgenommen 1969 in einem lärmenden Club - Kopenhagens berühmtem Jazzhus Montmartre - ist der Geschmack dieses Albums eher "dokumentarisch" als luxuriös Hi-Fidelity, dennoch kommt die Essenz von Abdullah Ibrahims Kommunikation laut und deutlich durch. Der Zuhörer wird in die robusten Rhythmen seines Solo-Piano-Stils hineingezogen, während er die Geschichte des Jazz aus einer südafrikanischen Perspektive neu untersucht, mit Anklängen an Lieder aus den Townships und Vamps, die an Monk und Duke und vieles mehr erinnern. African Piano war ein sehr einflussreiches Album, und es hat nichts von seiner Kraft verloren.
