A special and wonderful gem
What a splendid disc! Then why only 4 stars for 'general estimation'? Actually, this release deserves a maximum score. But the only minor point is that the complete soundtrack of Chaplin's 'silent' movie comprises several repetitions, which could have been avoided if an extensive suite was drawn from the complete score, possibly complemented on one disc with another suite. However, this repetition is never boring the listener, for, some exceptions notwithstanding, these repetitions are in general elaborated and diversely modified in their orchestration. As a whole, this release is pure joy and a special treat for the audiophile. I could never do without it any more.
As usual, CPO offers extensive information in the CD booklet.
And, by the way, has the sound engineer Helge Martensen ever been awarded one or other prize for his excellent recording? Every participation from the members of the orchestra is beautifully and analytically captured, which enhances the cheer enjoyment that this disc offers.
