Georg Friedrich Händel warf in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts einen langen Schatten auf das musikalische London und verdammte viele seiner Zeitgenossen – selbst hervorragende Komponisten – zu langen Jahren der Obskurität. Diese Aufnahme wirft Licht in vergessene Ecken und entdeckt einige glitzernde Juwelen, von denen einige ihren Interpreten ein schillerndes stimmliches Feuerwerk abverlangen. Mehrere dieser Komponisten vertonen Szenen aus der klassischen Mythologie oder alttestamentarischen Erzählungen – aber sie erkunden auch die Schattenseiten der barocken Psyche in einem von Davids dunkelsten Psalmen und in einer Darstellung des arkadischen Wahnsinns.
