Der in Madrid geborene Rodolfo Halffter erlernte durch die Initiative seiner Mutter das Klavierspielen und wurde später auch von Manuel de Falla unterrichtet. Durch die Entwicklung des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges war er gezwungen, 1939 seine Heimat zu verlassen und emigrierte nach Mexiko. Hier entwickelte er sich zu einer der führenden Persönlichkeiten der Musikszene. Seine drei Klaviersonaten kombinieren die Stilelemente eines Domenico Scarlatti mit romantischen und avantgardistischen Techniken. Doch immer klingen in Halffters Werken auch rhythmische und melodische Tupfer der spanischen und lateinamerikanischen Volksmusik an.
Rodolfo Halffter's music embraces almost every genre but he was primarily an instrumental composer. Born in Spain, and after the civil war resident in Mexico, Halffter became a leading figure in his adopted country. His three piano sonatas rank among his most important works for that instrument, combining Scarlattian playfulness with Romantic and avant-garde techniques. The other works on this disc, in which flute or violin duet with piano, abound in appealing Latin colour, poetic moods and refined, sometimes spirited, lyricism.
