„Die Macht des Schicksals“ gehört zu den Opern, mit denen Verdi mehr Mühe hatte, als mit anderen, und die Fassung, die wir heute zu hören gewohnt sind, unterscheidet sich erheblich von der ersten Version. Die heutige Fassung erlebte ihre Erstaufführung 1869 in der Mailänder Scala und wurde von Publikum und Kritik gut aufgenommen. Dabei ist diese Oper in formaler Anlage durchaus ein Experiment eines reifen Komponisten, der stets auf der Suche nach Neuem, Unerhörtem war. In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts avancierte die Oper zu einem Prüfstein für alle lyrischen SängerInnen.
