This 10 CD compilation is the only complete collection of the symphonies of Dmitry Shostakovich conducted by his son Maxim Shostakovich - more than ten hours of music. The challenging project is the result of several years of work by the younger Shostakovich with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic Choir a soloists Marina Shaguch (soprano), Peter Mikulas (bass) and Michail Ryssov (bass). The result of this mutually inspiring collaboration is this compilation of live recordings which is being released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birth on September 25, 1906. Maxim Shostakovich was trained by his father from an early age, so his interpretation of this symphonic monument of the 20th century has a uniquely authentic character.

Unerfüllte Erwartungen

Diese digitale Gesamteinspielung der Symphonien Dmitri Schostakowitschs mit seinem Sohn Maxim am Pult der Prager Symphoniker entstand in Live-Aufnahmen zwischen 1995 (Symphonie Nr. 13) und 2006 (Symphonien Nr. 3 und Nr. 11). Die Aufmachung ist mit einer soliden Pappbox, CDs in Papierhüllen und einem Beiheft, das Werkeinführungen in u. a. deutscher Sprache, die Vokaltexte aber leider nur auf Russisch (kyrillisch), Englisch und Tschechisch enthält, durchschnittlich. Schade finde ich, dass keine Anmerkungen Maxim Schostakowitschs zu seinem Ansatz beigefügt sind.

Ich habe mir von dieser Box angesichts außerordentlich guter, nicht überexpressiver, aber mit Detailliebe und Klangsinn herausgearbeiteter Konzertaufnahmen Maxim Schostakowitschs mit Daniel Hope und Heinrich Schiff und in Anbetracht seiner für meine Begriffe sehr gelungenen Einspielungen mit dem LSO für Collins viel versprochen. Keinen interpretatorischen Extremismus wie bei Kondraschin, aber doch Intensität, vielleicht auch eine ganz besonders wahrnehmbare innere Beteiligung angesichts der familiären Bindung. Leider höre ich von beidem nichts oder kaum etwas.

In keiner der Symphonien entwickelt Maxim Schostakowitsch für meine Begriffe einen wirklich individuellen Ansatz. Mag das angesichts der doch breiten Tonträger-Rezeption der Werke vielleicht auch viel verlangt sein, reißt mich sein Dirigat zudem auch nirgends richtig mit. Ansatzweise ansteckend engagiert wirken auf mich die Wiedergaben der Symphonien Nr. 5, Nr. 10, Nr. 11 bis 13 und Nr. 15, vor allem im atmosphärisch ziemlich dichten Largo der Fünften oder auch im Finale der Zehnten, in dem sich so etwas wie ein packender Drang nach vorn entwickelt. Die anderen Symphonien bleiben für mich vergleichsweise blass, zum Teil sogar spannungsarm. Ganz besonders schmerzlich kalt lässt mich in dieser Box etwa die gesamte Symphonie Nr. 6.

Sicher liegt dieser ernüchternde Eindruck ganz wesentlich an meinen eigenen Hörvoraussetzungen, die zuletzt durch Kondraschins Ansatz maßgeblich geprägt wurden. Trotzdem kann ich auch mit weniger aufgeladenen Versionen viel anfangen, etwa mit Sanderlinigs Interpretationen oder auch mit dem Kitajenko-Zyklus. Diese Dirigenten setzen bei weniger äußerem Temperament durch eine tiefere Durchdringung oder durch detailliertes Aushören andere Akzente, aber sie setzen sie. Eben dies fehlt mir bei Maxim Schostakowitsch in diesem Symphonien-Paket.

Klangtechnisch sind die Aufnahmen mir größtenteils (die Qualität schwankt ein wenig durch die Jahre) gleichfalls zu wenig profiliert, zu weich, zu wenig transparent. Das Orchester ist hörbar bemüht. Der vergleichsweise dünne Streicherklang und manche kleinen Unschärfen, zumal in den Holzbläsern, wären an sich für mein Hörvergnügen kein Problem. Aber es gibt orchestral eine ganze Reihe "besser" gespielter Aufnahmen.

Mit dem Erwerb dieser Aufnahmen macht man natürlich nicht wirklich etwas falsch, Schostakowitschs Musik wirkt trotzdem, und wer sie nicht kennt, kann auch durch diese Box in ihren Sog geraten. Wenn man aber die Wahl hat, sollte man sich nach Alternativen umsehen. Maßstab für mich ist die wie gesagt extreme Auslegung Kondraschins. Roschdestwenskis sehr vitale und individualistische Aufnahmen sind nicht mehr im Gesamtpaket verfügbar.

Nimmt man nur neuere Gesamtaufnahmen zum Vergleich, steht aber mit Gesamteinspielungen unter Haitink (sehr guter Klang, im Durchschnitt hohes interpretatorisches Niveau), Caetani (SACDs, auch auf CD guter Klang, spontan, aber nicht überexpressiv), Barschai (guter Klang, sehr günstig, durchwegs ansprechende, ernsthafte Interpretationen), Jansons (guter Klang, durchwegs hohes bis höchstes interpretatorisches Niveau mit teils mitreißend-inspirierten Wiedergaben, sehr günstig), Rostropowitsch und Kitajenko (SACDs, auch auf CD exzellenter Klang, sehr charakteristische Wiedergaben, sehr detailliert, außerordentliche dynamische Qualitäten) ausreichend Auswahl zur Verfügung.

Perhaps the most authorative cycle!

This cycle of Shostakovitch’s complete symphonies as performed under the baton of his son Maxim, is probably as close as we will ever get to an “authentic” cycle, since Maxim Shostakovitch is probably the man who most closely knew the composer, and what his father wanted to say in his music.

Performance
Tempos are generally on the slower side, which does the music good, allowing it to ‘spread its wings’. Especially in Symphony V, which has the longest ‘drawn out’ first movement of this work I know, comes close to the world of Symphony VIII. While the performances lack the almost maniacal and hysterical that one can hear in the Kondrashin recordings, they do allow the music to speak for itself. Repeated hearings will allow one to plumb the depth of these works, and depth they have!
The Prague Philharmonic is not the very best orchestra around (it is no Concertgebouw Orkest!), but the playing is quite well in general. There are some oddities (mainly in the brass), but that is the risk of a live performance. Also, some instruments may sound a bit strange to those not used to “Eastern Europe” instruments, which cab sound quite different from “Western” ones (clarinets, for instance)
In all, I’d give a 9 out of 10 for the performances.

Recording.
Recordings were, according to the booklet, all done live from 1995-2005. The sound is reasonably good, if somewhat ‘cramped’, as if the hall were rather small.

Packaging.
Simple and easy. The booklet gives only a short overview of the works, which is no problem. Either one is already familiar with the details of those works, and if not, simply lt the music speak for itself. The sung texts are given in original (Cyrillic) Russian, with English and Czech translations

This set, if only due to the fact that it is done by Maestro Maxim Shostakovich, should be a must-have for any and all of those interested in what the music of Dmitry Shostakovich has to say. Never mind the fact that the performances are perhaps not top notch, and neither is the recording!
