Product Information
24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 by Dmitri Shostakovich were written during an amazing short period of time - from October 1950 to March 1951. They have been conceived by the author as a cyclic work. Shostakovich was inspired to create the work by his trip to Leipzig, where he went to take part in the festivities dedicated to 200 years of J. S. Bach's death. After returning from Leipzig Shostakovich at once began to compose his preludes and fugues. Op. 87 have now by rights occupied its due place in life. The cycle is an extremely profound work of great mastery. These are 24 masterpieces, each with a world of its own. They must and can be compared to Bach's cycle. It is a new world in polyphony.
Tatiana Nikolaeva, USSR People's Artist, graduated with honours from two departments of the Moscow Conservatoire: piano and composition. She is a winner of three competitions - the Scriabin in Moscow, the 1st International Festival of Democratic Youth in Prague and J. S. Bach competition in Leipzig.
The pianist's concert activity started when she was still a student. She toured almost all the cities of the USSR and had played in over forty countries of the world. T Nikolaeva has a vast repertoire which includes almost all world piano literature, for example, over 50 concertos for piano and orchestra.
For over 30 years Tatiana Nikolaeva has been playing Shostakovich's cycle "24 Preludes and Fugues", especially actively during the last years. (melody. su)
