Gayaneh wurde als Ballett in vier Akten und sechs Szenen konzipiert. In seiner ursprünglichen Fassung nach einem Libretto von Konstantin Derzhavin wurde es im Dezember 1942 in Perm, wohin das Kirov-Ballett evakuiert worden war, uraufgeführt. Die Choreographie stammte von Anasimova und das Dekor von Natan Altman. Es wurde 1945 in Leningrad vom Kirov und 1957 in einer anderen Version vom Moskauer Bolschoi neu inszeniert. Für sein Werk erhielt der Komponist 1943 den Stalinpreis. Das Ballett basierte auf einem früheren Werk, Glück, das 1939 in Eriwan uraufgeführt wurde, und Khachaturian verwendete diese Musik für seine neue Partitur wieder.
