Lawrence David Rose: The Determinists, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

The Determinists examines the scientific, conceptual, and moral claims made by determinism's three most prominent proponents, Sam Harris, Robert Sapolsky, and Sabine Hossenfelder. Do the laws of physics endorse determinist doctrine? Has neuroscience established that neural activity causally determines our decisions? Are biology, environment, personal history, and group behavior influences that constrain free will, or do they collectively eliminate choice?

Can morality and personal responsibility be justified if we do not control our thoughts or actions?

The book also confronts a deeper problem largely overlooked in popular discus-sion. If every belief is dictated by prior causes, how can any belief-including the belief in determinism-be judged true? Can determinists appeal to evidence, reason, or truth while maintaining that all beliefs, including their own, are generated by causal forces beyond the thinker's control? Does this tension expose determinism to a legitimate charge of self-contradiction?
