Nach Warren Zevons Tod im Jahr 2003 entdeckte sein Sohn Jordan Zevon 126 unveröffentlichte Outtakes und Demos in einem klaviergroßen Tourkoffer. Diese Entdeckung wurde zu den besten dieser Aufnahmen destilliert und schließlich als 2CD-Set mit dem Titel Preludes am 1. Mai 2007 veröffentlicht.
Als das Album veröffentlicht wurde, enthielt es sechzehn unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus Zevons persönlichem Archiv sowie sechs nie zuvor veröffentlichte Songs und ein fünfteiliges Interview aus dem Jahr 2000 mit Jody Denberg von KGSR.
