British blues boomers’ barn-storming 1964 debut. Recorded on stage at London’s Marquee Club and featuring Eric Clapton ripping up the Chess songbook, this is a watershed album for British rock. As rough as hell, but you can almost smell the excitement. Ten bonus tracks double the thrills and pleasure. ★★★★ ' Q MAGAZINE
The Yardbirds, featuring Eric Clapton, live at the Marquee Club in 1964. The original album plus 10 bonus tracks.
One of the most famous British albums of the Sixties, Five Live Yardbirds brilliantly captures the excitement of London’s thriving R&B scene of the day.
Recorded live at London’s famous Marquee Cub in March of 1964, ‘Five Live Yardbirds’ remains the best document of the group’s early years and captures the group’s first guitarist Eric Clapton in superb form.
In this blistering set consisting of ten R&B evergreens from the likes of Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Howlin’ Wolf, The Yardbirds set themselves apart from their peers, both through the quality of the guitar playing and their energy level.
The rocking version of ‘Respectable’ takes the Isley Brothers’ original to new heights whilst ‘Too Much Monkey Business’, ‘Got Love If You Want It’ and ‘Smokestack Lightning’ feature particularly fine examples of the group’s so-called ‘rave-ups’. These frantic, extended guitar-harmonica instrumental jams paved the way for the open-ended improvisations of later groups like Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
This re-issue contains ten bonus tracks, all featuring Eric Clapton, which were recorded within a few months of the legendary Marquee gig. (charly. co. uk)
