Die ausgewachsene Rock-Oper über den tauben, stummen und blinden Tommy Walker brachte The Who 1969 den internationalen Superstar-Status. Der Weg zur Veröffentlichung war holprig: von Montag bis Donnerstag arbeitete die Band im Studio, am Wochenende gab sie Konzerte, um die desolate finanzielle Situation zu retten und neues Material vor Publikum zu testen. So geriet man zunehmend unter Zeitdruck, verpasste das Weihnachtsgeschäft 1968 und landete am Ende trotz aller Umstände einen riesigen Erfolg. Auf das Doppel-Album folgten eine Verfilmung und ein Musical.
