(sonymusic. ch)
Metallic Spheres is designed to be heard in two parts - ‘Metallic Side' (24'48”), and ‘Spheres Side' (25'09”). Also present are five musical sub-divisions in each part. The album uniquely utilizes David Gilmour's discernable electric guitar and lap steel guitar, Alex Paterson's sound manipulation, keyboards and turntables, and Youth's bass guitar and keyboards. "Fortunately, the resulting album goes above and beyond any expectations, with both artists taking advantage of the others' skills to put together a listening experience that only strengthens their individual reputations and repertoires. It's been almost 20 years since the Orb released the classic, ecstasy-fueled Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, and Metallic Spheres finds the duo expanding on their sound by bringing in a musician to enhance it with ponderous yet clinically precise guitar lines." "Metallic Spheres is a very successful, and seemingly very natural, collaboration. Both The Orb and David Gilmour completely play to each other's strengths, and the result is an exceedingly rich - and trippy - experience. Highly recommended for fans of either artist." (seattlepi. com)
"The opening 28-minute suite of music is superlative, Gilmour’s Olympian solos dovetailing perfectly with The Orb’s spacey atmospherics, including a delightful passage of acoustic / steel guitar and ambient synths reminiscent of Brian Eno’s moon-landing album Apollo." (Financial Times)
