Die Songs wurden bei mehreren Konzerten zwischen 1968 und 1970 in Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit und Kopenhagen aufgenommen. Der Produzent der Doors, Paul A. Rothchild, bemerkte: "Ich konnte keine kompletten Takes von vielen Songs bekommen, also habe ich manchmal mitten im Song von Detroit nach Philadelphia geschnitten. Es muss 2.000 Bearbeitungen auf dem Album geben."
In Concert enthält Titel, die zuvor auf Absolutely Live (1970), Alive, She Cried (1983) und Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1987) veröffentlicht wurden, sowie eine Aufnahme von "The End".
