For his third Columbia album My Time, Boz Scaggs continued his trek into the blues, pop and R&B mainstream, while developing a solid concert career and a catalog of much respected albums. In a very short period of about three years, he charted four albums, amassed a good amount of radio airplay, toured all over the world, and still had the ability to write and record infectious masterpieces.
Recorded at both CBS Studios in San Francisco and the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, My Time captures the artist at his best. Capturing on record a culmination of all the previous years of hard work and artistry in the studio and concert setting, this album was truly a turning point for the legendary Boz Scaggs.
Dinah Flo was the kick-off song and possibly the one track that finally captured a larger pop audience. Channeling the sounds of some of his favorite Philly and Motown grooves, the chart hit single was a radio favorite in 1972 and remained in his concert performances for several decades since. The song also had a revival in the early eighties as it was included in his platinum plus Hits album on Columbia.
The soul crooner continues his cool pace with some very fine interpretations in the way of Al Green's Old Time Lovin' and Allen Toussaint's Freedom For The Stallion. Both are recorded with the amazing Boz Scaggs Band from his previous albums and features the solid gospel feel vocals of Dorothy Morrison, Linda Tillery and Boz Scaggs himself.
Full-Lock Power Slide has the southern rock feel that would be felt later with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. Blazing guitars, driving keyboards and a tight rhythm section kept this one in his concert repertoire for many years.
The power balladry of the hit making side of Boz Scaggs continued to excel. He's a Fool For You and Might Have To Cry truly illustrate his seamless expertise to create a classic soul ballad, later churning out mega hits like Look What You've Done To Me and We're All Alone.
His self produced Muscle Shoals session was uniquely shown on the album closer and title track My Time. The haunting electric keyboard melody by Clayton Ivey and the acoustic guitars of the equally talented Eddie Hinton made this one of the most memorable features of this release. A stunning visit to both his past, present and future, My Time was the crossover album in waiting that truly defined a career direction that made this artist the legend that he is today.
For this newly remastered My Time / The Deluxe Edition, we have gone back to the Columbia tape vaults and have found several rarities that make this album that much more an enjoyable revisit. The super rare mono 45 mix of Dinah Flo is now included, along with the rare stereo Playback EP versions of Freedom For The Stallion and Full-Lock Power Slide (originally titled R 'N' R).
