Der ehemalige U. S. Marshall Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) bricht mit seinen Brüdern Virgil und Morgan, sowie deren Freund Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) auf, um sich in dem kleinen Städtchen Tombstone zur Ruhe zu setzen. Doch der Friede wird jäh gestört, als die „Cowboys“ in die Stadt einfallen und dort Unruhe stiften. Es kommt zu einem bitteren Kampf auf Leben und Tod, der schließlich in der legendären Schießerei am O. K. Corral gipfelt.
