1977: Madame Suzanne, Gattin des Regenschirmfabrikanten Pujol, fühlt sich vernachlässigt. Sie vergleicht sich mit einer „Potiche", einer Porzellanvase, die keinerlei Funktion hat und nur hübsch anzuschauen ist. Auch Pujol sieht in Suzanne lediglich ein dekoratives Schmuckstück. Doch während eines Streiks erleidet dieser einen Herzinfarkt. Kurzerhand übernimmt seine Frau die Geschäfte - und das wider erwarten sehr erfolgreich.
