Most of the ladies assembled here enjoyed their heyday in the Fifties and built on the early pioneering work of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and their like. Yet many of our featured divas had to deal with drugs, discrimination, disappointment or worse in their lives. We can only offer our respect and gratitude for this heartfelt music, much of it imbued with real-life emotion.
