American Song Book, ist Sarah Vaughan die unbestrittene Jazz-Vokalistin, die ihre
Stimme wie ein Melodieinstrument betrachtete. Ihre Phrasierung, ihr natürlicher
Sinn für den Swing und natürlich der Klang ihrer Stimme machten »Sassy« zu
einer Virtuosin auf einer Stufe mit den Musikern ihrer Band. Sie selbst sah sich
übrigens nicht als Jazzsängerin. Sie könnte zwar den Blues in jedes Stück, das
sie singt, hineinbringen, aber sie würde jegliche Art von Musik mögen.
