Count Basie (1904 - 1984) und Duke Ellington (1899 - 1975) waren die wichtigsten und langfristig erfolgreichsten Orchesterleiter der Jazz Geschichte. War für den Komponisten Ellington sein Orchester mit vielen Individualisten das Vehikel, um seine Kompositionen und Arrangements klangliche Gestalt annehmen zu lassen, stand für Basie der Rhythmus und seine Umsetzung mit der Strahlkraft eines großen Ensembles im Mittelpunkt. Dazu kam, dass Basie immer großen Wert auf Präzision legte. Eigenschaften, die auch alle großen Sänger und Sängerinnen begeisterten und so zu vielen Kollaborationen mit der Basie Band führten.

Jimmy Rushing war ein großartiger Blues Shouter und der erste wichtige Sänger der Basie Band von 1937 bis 1950. Diese Rolle sollte dann Joe Williams übernehmen, als Basie nach einer kurzen Auflösung seiner Band mit frischem Sound und Personal neu durchstartete. Williams war ein ausgezeichneter Vertreter eines moderneren Blues Gesangs, aber ebenso ein großartiger Improvisator und Balladeninterpret.
Neben diesen Schätzen findet man auf dieser 10 CD-Box die Highlights der Basie-Band mit Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Eckstine, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Sarah Vaughan und Ella Fitzgerald.
