By contrast to Billie Holiday, AVID’s next female jazz singer travelled a very different career path!
Peggy Lee was born five years later than Billie in 1920 and had an equally tough upbringing courtesy of a cruel stepmother. Fortunately she managed to escape and by 1941 found her way into the Benny Goodman Band. Briefly settling down to married life she was back at Capitol Records by 1944 and ready to continue her recording career.
Our first CD in this fine re-mastered double features Peggy with Bing Crosby on his hugely popular radio shows where she was a regular favourite. We also feature tracks from her stay at Decca Records including the hit “Lover” before returning to Capitol in 1957.
CD 2 comprises her classic Decca LP Black Coffee in it’s entirety plus six tracks from the movie Pete Kelly’s Blues in which Peggy gained an Oscar nomination. Rounding off with perhaps her most famous song “He’s A Tramp” (from Disney’s Lady And The Tramp).
Peggy Lee died in 2002 at the ripe old age of 81, her place in the pantheon of great female singers of popular American music assured.
