Und findet sich dieser Begriff auch in keinem Duden, so ist er doch allgemein gültig. Jedermann verbindet gleich ein ganz besonderes Gefühl mit dieser Zeit.

Alle Geschenke sind ausgepackt, die aufgeregte Erwartung ist vorbei. Die Verwandten und Freunde haben sich auf den Weg nach Hause gemacht, die Kinder langweilen sich mit ihrem neuen Spielzeug und im Radio läuft beinahe verschämt noch ab und zu ein Weihnachtslied.
Eine subtile Melancholie, ein Gefühl bitterer Süße, leichter Wehmut, die verklungene Freuden noch durchschimmern lässt, ein kurzes Innehalten vor dem kraftvollen Aufbruch ins neue Jahr.

Genau diese emotionale Melange haftet als Essenz allen Kompositionen dieser Produktion an, so Ed Partyka über „The Day After Christmas“. Und wenn man dann noch weiß, dass Partyka Brass, das Quintett um Ed Partyka, auf Betreiben von Carla Bley und Steve Swallow für die Tour und spätere Aufnahme von „Carla’s Christmas Carols“ entstanden ist und mit „The Day After Christmas“ quasi seine Fortsetzung findet, dann ist die Namensgebung mehr als logisch. Auch, oder gerade weil, die Kompositionen und deren Interpretation durch das Ausnahmequintett um Ed Partyka alles andere als weihnachtlich sind und ausdrücklich Jahreszeiten unabhängig funktionieren!

Na ja – und außerdem dient der Name dann auch als bestes Alibi, Carla Bley’s wundervolles Arrangement von „Santa Claus Is Coming To Town“ doch noch zu veröffentlichen, wie Ed Partyka mit einem (ganz unweihnachtlichen) Zwinkern verrät...

"Between the years" is that period of time right after Christmas, just before the New Year's Eve fireworks light up the wintry darkness. Even if you can't find the term in a dictionary, it still remains universal - everyone connects this time with a very special feeling. All the presents are unwrapped and the excitement and anticipation are over. Relatives and friends have made their ways home, the kids are bored with their new toys, and the radio self-consciously plays a Christmas song from time to time. A subtle melancholy, a sense of bitter sweetness and a wistfulness which allows the fading joys to shine lightly through. Breathing space before the vigorous start of the new year.

According to Ed Partyka, it is exactly this emotional melange which forms the essence of the compositions on "The Day After Christmas". And if you keep in mind that at the instigation of Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, Partyka Brass (Ed Partyka's quintet) was involved in the tour and subsequent recording of "Carla's Christmas Carols", which "The Day After Christmas" is virtually a continuation of, then the name seems more than logical. And also, or maybe even because, the compositions and their interpretation by Ed Partyka's exceptional quintet are anything but Christmasy. In fact they are perfect for any season!
