"Between the years" is that period of time right after Christmas, just before the New Year's Eve fireworks light up the wintry darkness. Even if you can't find the term in a dictionary, it still remains universal - everyone connects this time with a very special feeling. All the presents are unwrapped and the excitement and anticipation are over. Relatives and friends have made their ways home, the kids are bored with their new toys, and the radio self-consciously plays a Christmas song from time to time. A subtle melancholy, a sense of bitter sweetness and a wistfulness which allows the fading joys to shine lightly through. Breathing space before the vigorous start of the new year.
According to Ed Partyka, it is exactly this emotional melange which forms the essence of the compositions on "The Day After Christmas". And if you keep in mind that at the instigation of Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, Partyka Brass (Ed Partyka's quintet) was involved in the tour and subsequent recording of "Carla's Christmas Carols", which "The Day After Christmas" is virtually a continuation of, then the name seems more than logical. And also, or maybe even because, the compositions and their interpretation by Ed Partyka's exceptional quintet are anything but Christmasy. In fact they are perfect for any season!
