Oscar Peterson: 1961 - Köln, Gürzenich (remastered) (180g) auf 2 LPs

In den 50er Jahren hatte es Oscar Peterson mit einer schlagzeuglosen Besetzung zum bestbezahlten Trio des Jazz gebracht. Der Ausstieg seines Gitarristen und die wachsende Nachfrage für Auftritte in größeren Hallen ließen ihn und seinen künftigen Manager Norman Granz über eine neue Instrumentierung nachdenken: Anstelle einer kammermusikalischen Besetzung mit Klavier, Bass und Gitarre entschlossen sie sich für das klassische Pianotrio - und damit für einen akustisch wesentlich präsentieren Schlagzeuger. 1958 übernahm Gene Gammage die Rolle, im folgenden Jahr konstituierte sich jene Formation, die für nicht wenige als die beste des Pianisten gilt. Peterson, Ray Brown und der neue dritte Mann Ed Thigpen traten im Übrigen nicht nur auf der Bühne als Dreiergespann auf: 1960 gründeten sie gemeinsam in Toronto die Advanced School of Contemporary Music. Ausgebildet wurden ausschließlich Rhythmusgruppen, die Unterrichtssituation war eine ausgesprochen exklusive: Ein Schüler von Peterson hatte auch mit Brown und Thigpen zu spielen und einer von Brown kam nicht daran vorbei, sich einem Peterson und Thigpen zu stellen. 1964 schloss die Schule, aus finanziellen Gründen. Ein Jahr später löste sich auch das Trio auf. Damit endete ein Bandkapitel, das der Pianist später so umschrieb: „Sechs Jahre unglaublicher Musik“. ...

In the 1950s Oscar Peterson managed to form the best paid jazz trio without percussion instruments. The resignation of his guitarist and the growing demand for concerts in large halls made him and his future manager Norman Granz think about a new instrumentation: Instead of a chamber musical orchestration with piano, basso and guitar they opted for the classical piano trio - and therefore in favour of acoustically way more prominent drums. In 1958 Gene Gammage assumed this position. However, a year later the formation was altered and the pianist‘s best group ever was established, as many believe. Peterson, Ray Brown and the new third-man Ed Thigpen did not only appear on stage as a trio: together they established the Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Tokyo in 1960. They only worked with rhythm sections and the setting was exceptionally exclusive: the students of Peterson also had to perform with Brown and Thigpen, whereas Brown‘s pupils could not avoid Peterson‘s and Thigpen‘s scrutiny. In 1964 the school had to close down for financial reasons and a year later the trio broke up. The pianist later described this period in the band‘s history as: „Six years of incredible music“. ....
