Die Titel ‘Boy From New York City’ (Best Pop Performance) und ‘Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)’ (Best Jazz Performance) sind selbstverständlich Bestandteil dieser umfassenden Best Of 2CD.
Formed in New York City in 1969, The Manhattan Transfer rose to the top of the UK charts in 1977 with ‘Chanson D’Amour,’ a record that kicked off a love affair between the British public and the vocal quartet. They racked up eight further UK chart entries, all of which are included in this 40-track retrospective. Effortlessly switching from rock and roll to pop, bebop, old time gospel, bossa nova and ‘30s jazz swing, this set demonstrates why The Manhattan Transfer are considered the most versatile vocal harmony group on the planet. As if to underline this point, the group’s array of Grammy Awards puts them in the highest echelon of vocal harmony groups. In 1981 they were the first group to win Grammy Awards in both Pop and Jazz categories in the same year with ‘Boy From New York City’ (Best Pop Performance) and ‘Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)’ (Best Jazz Performance) both of which are included in this package. As though that wasn’t enough, in 1982 and 1983 they won consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance with ‘Route 66’ and ‘Why Not’. Once again, both included on this superior package. They actually managed to top the previous achievements when they won an unprecedented 12 nominations for the album Vocalese – the single greatest number of Grammy nominations that any album has achieved in one year – thus cementing their position as one of the most important and innovative vocal groups in the history of pop muzak! Manhattan Transfer effectively reinvented many traditional songs for the audiences of the 70s, 80s and 90s and they are still together to this day.
