At age 25, Canadian trumpet lady Ingrid Jensen became the youngest teacher at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. In later years, she was an Artist-in-residence at Berlin Hochschule (Germany), at New World School of the Arts in Miami and Tufts University in Boston as well as an instructor at the Jamey Aebersold workshop. She performed, toured or recorded with - among others - Kenny Barron, Gary Bartz, Ethel Ennis, Dizzy Gillespie, the Mingus Big Band, and Marc Copland. And that was only the beginning.
One of the most expressive trumpet players on the scene today, Ingrid Jensen will soon be recognized as a major contributor to the perpetuation of the jazz art. Says the London Reporter: "Ingrid Jensen does not conform to the usual pattern. Her style includes none of the obvious fireworks (...) Her sound, virtually devoid of vibrato, has a kind of matt finish to it in place of the customary glitter (...) Her delivery is so authoritative that you have to listen." Her artistry has already been recognized with awards in Canada, Ireland, Boston, and other places. Recently, she has been a featured artist with the Maria Schneider Orchestra and performed at a Trumpet Summit in Amsterdam with Clark Terry, Roy Hargrove, Tom Harrell and Benny Bailey.
"Higher Grounds" is Ingrid Jensen's third CD on ENJA and her strongest effort so far. With assistance from unique Gary Thomas on tenor sax and flute, keyboard wizard Dave Kikoski, versatile bass player Ed Howard, and living legend Victor Lewis on drums, 33-year-old Ingrid Jensen delivers a fresh mixture of original tunes, old-time ballads, and some rare modern standards (by such as Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, and Ted Nash). Displaying technical maturity and focused emotion, Ingrid Jensen and her quintet present a contribution to the jazz art that radiates strength, elegance and beauty.
