The association of Houston Person and Etta Jones was a joyful and long-lasting one, beginning with a chance pairing at a 1968 concert in Washington, DC, and ending with Etta's passing in 2001. The musical chemistry between the vocalist and the tenor saxman was obvious. Both were solidly based in the classic jazz tradition of swing and soul, improvisation was never at the expense of melody and lyric interpretation arose out of a song's emotional intent. Theirs was a magical collaboration, in which artistry, personality, and outlook were in complete accord. For his latest HighNote recording, Houston has recorded a loving tribute to the memory of his long-time colleague; selecting songs that Etta particularly enjoyed performing with Houston. To Etta With Love could not be more aptly titled.
