Product Information
This double CD contains two complete George Lewis albums from 1958 recorded under the prestigious supervision of Norman Granz. One of them, “The Perennial George Lewis”, holds a special place in the hearts of many Lewis enthusiasts and the other, Oh Didn't He Ramble” (issued in the UK as a 10” album 'Raggin' And Stompin' and EP “New Orleans Memories”) is somewhat less well known but equal in stature.
Of considerable added importance is a very scarce (only ever available in the States) album by longtime Lewis pianist, who had been in the band from the days of Bunk Johnson, Alton Purnell. Purnell's enormously appealing blues and boogie tinged playing (a great influence on Fats Domono) and vocals were an integral part of the important early '50s George Lewis band. This album came about through the instigation of tenor sax-man Plas Johnson (of Henry Mancini “Pink Panther” fame) who is featured on several tracks.
