Als sechste CD in seiner Piano-Serie legt Arbors diese Scheibe mit Eddie Higgins, eingespielt Ende 1999, vor, und damit dessen erstes Soloalbum in seiner fünfzigjährigen Musikerkarriere. Higgins kann Auftritte mit solchen Top-Jazzern wie Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, AI Grey, Freddie Hubbard oder Wayne Shorter verzeichnen, ist also im Jazz kein unbeschriebenes Blatt, wenngleich auch in Europa relativ unbekannt. Auf dieser CD beweist Higgins seine handwerklich perfekten Fähigkeiten in vierzehn mehr oder weniger bekannten Titeln aus dem Great American Songbook. Higgins hat vornehmlich Inspirationen aus der swingenden Jazz-Pianotradition aufgenommen und pflegt eine sehr melodiöse individuelle Spielweise, die er hier in Balladen und Mid-Tempo- Stücken präsentiert. Sein Spiel bewegt sich ziemlich nahe der Melodielinie, weitschweifende improvisatorische Wege finden sich hier kaum, weshalb mir hier bei aller Perfektion doch etwas die ideenschwangeren Ausreißer in Up-Tempo-Nummern fehlen. Von diesen geringfügigen Einschränkungen abgesehen, dennoch eine besonders Piano-Freaks ansprechende, empfehlenswerte CD und ein Beispiel für ausgereiftes pianistisches Können.

"Although the year 2000 marks my 50th year as a professional and I have been recording since 1957, I´ve never made an entirely solo album. Playing (p) presents both challenges and opportunities. Obviously, there´s no place to hide: you´re the rhythm section, the soloist and the arranger all rolled into one, so every note counts. On the other hand, the freedom is complete: if you feel like a change of key, tempo or meter (or even of song!) it´s up to you without having to explain anything to anybody. I´ve been lucky in my career in the sense that I´ve been able to work solo, duo, trio (a lot) with horns and with singers, one of my favorite formats.
