During the late Fifties, Detroit saw the emergence of some of the finest neo-bop jazzmen, among them Curtis Fuller and Sylvester “Sonny Red” Kyner, two of the most significant young-blood representatives of the movement. Fuller, a 23-year old disciple of trombonist J. J. Johnson, displayed, even then, full command of his horn, playing with a vibrato-less style, flowing conception and a slightly greater dynamic range than his mentor. Sonny Red, 25-years-old at the time, was a Birdcalling shouter, with a pungent attack, fierce drive and a truly Bird-inspired emotional strength. These 1957 quintet recordings amply illustrate the wealth of talent emerging from Detroit that left its invigorating mark on the New York scene in the late Fifties.(freshsoundrecords. com)
