This ingenious young man, born in 1916 to die in 1942, crossed the history of jazz, leaving an indelible impression behind him in less than two years. He was hired in August 1939 by the most famous band leader of the period, Benny Goodman, but had to part company in June 1941 for hospital care, and thanks to him he had countless occasions to play before very large numbers, either through concerts or records. Charlie Christian was the first to truly master the electrically amplified guitar. He thus became one of the heroes of 20th century popular music. Stepping beyond his role as a pioneer, he above all created great music, brimming with inventions which had a determining influence and opened up new horizons to jazz in perpetual movement. In the present selection we may, of course, hear him in Benny Goodman’s set-ups and also presiding Homeric jam sessions during which he developed long and fantastic improvisations to inspire several generations of guitarists and jazzmen from every walk of life.
