+ Charlie Shavers, Shad Collins u. a.
In most of the recordings featured in this new selection, we discover that Billie is quite different from the lady who enchanted us in her older discs, particularly those of 1940 where she is surrounded by her accomplices from the Count Basie orchestra, above all saxophonist Lester Young, her closest friend, whose playing was totally in harmony with her, and also trumpeter Buck Clayton. He actually considered that ‘Lady Day’s’ recordings dating from the early fifties were superior: During her youth, he claimed, Billie sang like a kid, and God knows she had talent. Buck went on to say that a woman took over thereafter, and that her new interpretations were more mature. This opinion, which is all the more acceptable coming from a musician who was an eye-witness, prompts a greater appreciation of the works of this singer at a turning point in her life. After a contract of several years with a large company which used great means to record her – the superb tracks 10, 13, 15 and 18 are all proof as Billie, in the right setting, is blooming and even funny – impresario Norman Granz took her under his wing and organised sessions where he attempted to recapture her former spontaneity. Granz’ protégés also participated, headed by the Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, surrounded by a few soloists who conversed with Billie and expressed themselves freely. Among them we find Charlie Shavers, who had recorded with the singer in 1939, saxophonist Paul Quinichette, such a compliant disciple of President Lester Young that he had been tagged ‘Vice-Pres’, the first-rate guitarist Barney Kessel and Ray Brown, the unyielding bassist and husband of Ella Fitzgerald! It’s true that jazz is one big family.
