Not what most would expect - but an incredible piece
Most people associate a certain simplicity of rhythm and harmony with Minimal Music including the earlier pieces of John Adams (such as the 'Grand Pianola Music'). The gem on this disc however is the piece "Absolute jest" which isn't minimal music, so beware (if you're looking for that), but a gorgeous piece nevertheless - inspired by various Beethoven compositions (piano concertos and late string quartets) and set for string quartet and orchestra. There isn't much music for this intriguing combination and the other one that comes to mind is also based/inspired by other compositions, i.e. Schönberg's Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra based on one of Händel's Conerti Grossi. What Adams does in Absolute Jest is a masterly transformation of the thematic material of the Beethoven works: you here the themes emerging in a kind of anticipatory fashion until they appear in full splendor at the various climaxes of the concert - highly fascinating composition. Fantastic recording, great playing, very informative booklet. Highly recommended.
