Nach Abschluss unserer Sallinen-Edition mit seinen symphonischen Hauptwerken, bei der der Komponist selbst die Auswahl der Werke als auch die künstlerische Beratung übernahm, möchten wir gerne noch mehr Kammermusik von ihm vorstellen. Aulis Sallinen hat bei quantitativer Betrachtung seines Gesamtoeuvres das Violoncello jedem anderen Soloinstrument vorgezogen und eine Konstante, die Sallinens Kammermusikwerke gleichermaßen durchzieht, ist seine Liebe zum Celloklang. Die Sonata per violoncello e piano komponierte Sallinen im Auftrag des Naantali Music Festivals, 2005 auch durch seine Widmungsträger Arto Noras und Ralf Gothóni uraufgeführt. Ein kompaktes Werk, dessen satzübergreifende Elemente darauf hindeuten, daß es der Komponist als einen einzigen Komplex auffasst. From a Swan Song ist ein ausgedehntes Werk von beinahe fünfzehnminütiger Spieldauer und entwickelt sich, wie es seinem gedanklichen Ausgangspunkt entspricht, in der Art einer Szene, worin die beiden Instrumentalisten als Akteure einen dramatischen Dialog spielen. Im Vorwort zu seinem einzigen Klaviertrio verrät Sallinen kaum mehr als in der Partitur zu seinem »Schwanengesang«. Er schreibt lediglich: »Die sinnliche Welt eines allmählich erblindenden Malers ist am Ende dazu verdammt, nur noch durch die Erinnerung zu funktionieren. Dank ihrer weiß er, wie Gelb und Blau zusammenklingen, doch er hört und er sieht es nicht mehr. Als ich diese Komposition im Auftrag des finnischen Naantali Music Festival für den Sommer 2010 schrieb, dachte ich die ganze Zeit an die drei hervorragenden finnischen Musiker, die das Stück aufführen sollten: Ralf Gothóni (Klavier), Elina Vähälä (Violine) und Arto Noras (Violoncello)«. Und diese Interpreten sind auch auf unserer CD-Einspielung zu hören.

Sallinen's Chamber Music
Following the conclusion of our edition featuring Aulis Sallinen's principal symphonic works and involving the composer's participation in the program selection process and his cooperation as an artistic consultant, we would now like to present more chamber music by him. When we examine the instrumental statistics for Aulis Sallinen's overall oeuvre, we see that in quantitative terms he has preferred the violoncello above all other solo instruments, and a constant that uniformly pervades his chamber compositions is his love of the cello sound. He composed the Sonata per violoncello e piano as a commissioned work for the Naantali Music Festival. Its dedicatees Arto Noras and Ralf Gothóni premiered it in 2005. It is a compact work with elements transcending movement limits indicating that the composer views it as a single complex. From a Swan Song is an extended work of almost fifteen minutes in duration and develops – in keeping with the idea functioning as its point of departure – in the manner of a scene in which the two instrumentalists are actors who perform a dramatic dialogue. In the introduction to his only piano trio Sallinen reveals hardly more than he does in the score of his Swan Song. He merely writes: »The sensory world of a painter gradually losing his eyesight is damned in the end to function merely by memory. Thanks to memory, he knows how yellow and blue sound together, but he hears it while no longer seeing it. When I wrote this composition as a commissioned work for the Finnish Naantali Music Festival held in the summer of 2010, I was thinking all along of the three outstanding Finnish musicians who would perform the piece: Ralf Gothóni (piano), Elina Vähälä (violin), and Arto Noras (violoncello).« These interpreters are also heard on our CD recording.
