»Aleko« war Sergei Rachmaninoffs erste seiner drei Opern, die der Student zur Examensprüfung am Moskauer Konservatorium vorlegte. Die Uraufführung fand am 9. Juli 1893 unter großer Begeisterung des Publikums und besonders der Jury statt, die ihm dafür ohne Einschränkung die Goldmedaille zuerkannte. Dies war ein weiterer Meilenstein in der steilen Karriere des gerade einmal neunzehnjährigen Komponisten.
