Die Musik auf diesem Album umfasst einen Zeitraum von vierzig Jahren von 1948 bis 1988 und spiegelt Dutilleux' stilistische Entwicklung als Komponist wider.
Er betrachtete die Sonate als das erste Hauptwerk in seinem Katalog und sie stellt eine Abkehr von der Tradition dar und umfasst die transformativen musikalischen Erkundungen der Zeit.
Die drei Préludes sind Stücke von konzentrierter Atmosphäre, »eine Art Klangfarbenstudie«, wie der Komponist es ausdrückt, und jedes ist einem berühmten Pianisten gewidmet: Nr. 1 Arthur Rubinstein, Nr. 2 Claude Helffer und Nr. 3 Eugène Istomin.
Dutilleux' lebhafte Musik für das Ballett Le Loup (»Der Wolf«) ist hier in einer Erstaufnahme der ursprünglichen Klaviersoloversion zu hören.
