Als John Eliot Gardiner Mitte der 1970er Jahre sein Monteverdi-Orchester auf frühe Instrumente umstellte und es in English Baroque Soloists umbenannte, engagierte er dieses großartige Ensemble, den Monteverdi Choir und eine Schar erstklassiger Solisten für die bedeutendsten Werke des "größten Genies, das wir [England] je hatten": Henry Purcell! Der Empfang war einhellig enthusiastisch und veranlasste das Fachmagazin Diapason zu der Aussage: "Gardiners Lesart von Purcell, dramatisch, verfeinert, manchmal brennend, überwältigend, immer bezaubernd, darf in keiner Sammlung eines jeden Musikliebhabers fehlen. Purcell selbst ist da!"
