Rachmaninovs Klaviersonate Nr. 1 war ursprünglich als programmatisches Werk konzipiert, das von Goethes Faust inspiriert war, und obwohl er sich schließlich gegen die Bezeichnung des Werks entschied, ist die Inspiration in Elementen der Musik hörbar: Es handelt sich um eine ausgedehnte und komplexe Sonate im symphonischen Maßstab.
Die zweite Sonate taucht uns in eine turbulente und harmonisch reiche Klangwelt ein. Die äußeren Abschnitte des zweiten Satzes weisen eine sehnsüchtige Chromatik auf, die der von Debussy und Ravel bemerkenswert ähnlich ist, und das Finale ist ein Feuerwerk aus schillernder Technik und vollkehliger Leidenschaft. Rachmaninovs letztes originelles Soloklavierwerk waren die faszinierenden Variationen über ein Thema von Corelli, die dem großen Geiger Fritz Kreisler gewidmet waren. Das Thema basiert auf der berühmten "La folia"-Melodie, einer alten und weit verbreiteten Melodie, die in zahlreichen Variationen und in Corellis Violinsonate Nr. 12 verwendet wird.
Bergheau bringt seine charakteristische Leidenschaft und sein Können in diese Stücke ein und feiert Rachmaninovs einzigartig erfinderischen Pianismus in seinem Jubiläumsjahr.
