Im umfangreichen Schaffen von William Alwyn befinden sich auch mehrere deskriptive Werke, wie z. B. die dramatische Ouvertüre Der Mohr von Venedig, die den schwierigen und sperrigen Hauptcharakter aus Shakespeares Othello untersucht. Überhaupt gelingt es Alwyn immer wieder in erstaunlichem Maße, sehr unterschiedliche Stimmungen in seinen Orchesterwerken zum Ausdruck zu bringen. So auch bei der Serenade und der Orchesterversion der Seven Irish Tunes, die auf dieser CD als Weltersteinspielung zu hören sind. David Lloyd-Jones vollendet mit dem Concerto Grosso Nr. 3, das Sir Henry Wood gewidmet ist, diese CD-Serie.
