Hummel war die Karriere eines Wunderkinds beschieden. Mozart hatte ihn spielen gehört, protegierte ihn und machte ihn für zwei Jahre zu seinem Schüler. Mit zehn Jahren begann Hummel bereits eine Konzerttournee durch ganz Mitteleuropa. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Wien studierte er bei Haydn, Salieri und Albrechtsberger. Er wurde enger Freund Beethovens und allseits für sein virtuoses Klavierspiel bewundert. 1816 wurde er zum Kapellmeister in Stuttgart ernannt; später übernahm er den gleichen Posten in Weimar, wo er bis zu seinem Tod blieb. Die 6-CD-Box stellt einige der schönsten und bedeutendsten Werke Hummels zusammen, wobei das Schwergewicht zwar auf der Klavierkomposition liegt, aber auch Konzertstücke und Kammermusikwerke einen Eindruck vom vielseitigen Schaffen des Komponisten geben.
